• Douchanbé était connu sous le nom de Dyushambe en russe jusqu'en 1929, puis renommé Stalinabad d'après Joseph Staline de 1929 à 1961.
• La ville est divisée en quatre districts nommés d'après d'éminentes figures historiques : Ismail Samani, Avicenne, Ferdowsi et Shah Mansur.
• Douchanbé est situé dans la vallée du Hisar, délimité par la chaîne du Hisar au nord et à l'est et par plusieurs chaînes de montagnes incluant le Babatag, l'Aktau, le Rangontau et le Karatau au sud.
